This is a year-long, monthly mentorship Invent Washington training for the 2021-2022 school year.  It is designed for teachers of students in grades K-8 who are interested and willing to lead a year-long, project-based invention unit with their students this upcoming school year.  We will meet once a month via Zoom to discuss the design process, share how lessons are going, and reflect on assigned readings from the book Project Based Learning: Real Questions. Real Answers. How to Unpack PBL and Inquiry by Cooper and Murphy. Students will have the option to enter their invention into a virtual nationwide competition in the spring.

Invent Washington is a student-choice, project based learning program that fosters creativity and invention through the design process. Teacher trainings in the form of one-day trainings have been offered for years, but we recognize that it can be complicated.  This year-long teacher mentorship, led via Zoom, seeks to smooth the process–teachers receive monthly training and support and engaged in professional development not only for the teaching of Invent Washington but for project based learning as well. Furthermore, our trainings offer specific ideas on how to integrate the lessons and activities into daily curriculum so that all students have the opportunity to pursue their interests through the design process.

Program Objectives    Review Criteria
  1. Teachers will learn which learning targets to select for their grade level and when and how to evaluate individual student progress in meeting these goals using a project assessment tool they create for their situations.
  2. Teachers will learn, test out, and reflect upon the integration of knowledge and skills from various areas through more complex investigations and multi-disciplinary projects.
  3. Teachers will learn how to set up and run mini-conferences focusing on specific learning targets with students as a vehicle for giving effective feedback three times during the project timeline. These conferences are for small groups and support a growth mindset rather than telling students what they are doing correctly and incorrectly.
  4. Teachers will learn about different types of research information students can gather, and then teachers will create and use simple templates for students to collect research in different forms that meet the needs of their students.
